A Beginner’s guide to Brazilian jiu-jitsu with One Purpose

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is one of the most popular martial arts in the world, and it has never been easier to get started training. This article explains many of the things a newcomer to the sport will want to know.

One Purpose BJJ is one of the most popular Jiu-Jitsu gyms in Queensland and a great place for people who are new to the sport.

We have many classes for beginners every week and you can attend a class for free without having to sign up.

Our classes are split by age, level and format (gi and nogi).

Kids BJJ

If you are enrolling your kids in BJJ we should look at the specific age groups for kids classes that we offer from 4 to 13 yo.

Once the teenagers turn 14 yo they should join the adults classes, we have many teenagers in those groups so they will fit it perfectly fine.

Adults and 14yo+

If you’re an adult starting your BJJ journey now, I will recommend you to start by attending the fundamentals classes, these classes are designed for beginners and you will learn all the basics before you can start rolling (sparring) in the intermediate classes.

Gi vs NoGi

BJJ in the Gi is the traditional form of training the martial art, it presents more technical possibilities and it’s a slower pace of rolling if compared to NoGi.

NoGi sparring tends to be faster paced as it’s difficult to hold someone in a position for long periods of time without a Gi on.

Nowdays most jiu-jitsu practioners practice both modalities as one can complement the other in different ways.
